Ruminations from the Rector - October 2009

What is the river of Life bringing you today?  What new insights and understandings have you discovered as you flow in this never ending stream?  As you embrace the chill in the October air, what memories, hopes, dreams, and possibilities stir in your soul?  How are you celebrating Life in your ordinary day to day activities?  How are you reconciling what is, with what you want to be?

These questions and others come to mind as I step again into the autumn of this year and the autumn of my life.  These and others arise as I reflect and ruminate over the past four years since we first dedicated and consecrated the Sanctuary and have struggled to define and activate our new mission of service.  This is a time of harvesting, feasting and celebrating the accomplishments of the past season.  This is a time of remembrance and expectancy.  This is a time of endings and beginnings.

When you enter the Sanctuary over the next months, you will see an old/new look and feel.  We’re celebrating what has been and what will be by realigning the focus from the horizontal to the vertical.  Life is all about perspective.  Where you stand or sit determines what you see.  What you see determines what you are to be.  The vertical is a revelatory perspective and connection; a calling for us all to come Home, to awaken to the new Life that is coming through us every moment of every day.  It is the Cristos, the beauty of the Anointing that has taken place for you through the anointing of humanity as modeled in the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus the Christ.  It is a focus on the radiation of Love that flows through the world, rather than the crystallization of it.  It intersects with the horizontal, which is the ordinary day-to-day activities that usually keep us from the awareness of the vertical because it is where most of our attention resides.  When we give attention to the vertical and allow it to intersect with the horizontal, our lives move from ordinary to extraordinary, from tedium to inspired enthusiastic service.

We’re in a new time, a new season of service and generosity.  We’re in a new cycle of life and death and new life.  We’re in a place where we need to focus on the vertical, so we can bridge the gap to the horizontal.  The world needs us to live in more loving kindness, openness, generosity and sacred service.  The world needs us, two by two to make a million and bring this day around.  I pray this day that you see and become the Beauty, the Possibilities, Revelatory Perspectives and Blessings that bring LIFE to life.
